At the time of this report one man on a “cherry picker” crane has been injured in the collapse of an underground parking unit just north of Ellis Street along Dufferin Place. A police robot will explore the underground section in search of any other possible victims. A special search unit from the Toronto area is on it’s way to carry out an even more detailed search of this old parking garage. From this reporter’s assessment it appears only a section of the upper deck collapsed under heat strain and the added additional weight of the crane which was being used to paint an adjacent building. ~ Mike Elliott.. “windsorwindow news”

Entry from: Toronto, Canada Entry Title: “Winter arrives” Entry: “Having had a few days to appreciate the beauty of the autumn colours on the trees, winter has now descended on Toronto, with several snow flurries in the last few days, and the first dusting on the ground. The cold would be bearable if it were not for the icy wind that cuts through everything and makes the morning walk to the bus stop a battle against nature. I can understand why the locals use the subterranean PATH system, an underground network of food courts, shopping malls, and subway stations running beneath downtown Toronto, but I got lost in seconds (not a surprise really). As one colleague advised, the only way to navigate is to be a meerkat and stick your head above ground every so often to ensure you are going in the right direction. Despite the weather I have continued to explore, visiting the Distillery district this weekend – a renovated warehouse area of red-brick buildings now housing art galleries, modern jewellery and shops selling high end home design brands such as alessi, georg jensen and bodum. Perfect for killing a cold Sunday afternoon and spending a fair amount of cash. I’ve also started to find some decent restaurants now have I had a chance to settle in, enjoying the most amazing liver, mash and glass of …

Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup (Tom Yum Goong)

Shrimps, mushrooms, coriander in exotic chicken, shrimp and Thai herb based soup.
The base of this soup is what makes it stand out from the sour versions that dot most of Toronto. Another proprietary recipe, but a fave of mine, one can really taste all the seafood (shrimp) shells used to make the stock.

Beef Panang

We ordered this from the regular menu as my brother has never tried it. I would consider this a specialty of Linda – melt-in-the-mouth beef that is lightly battered before being set in a rich coconut curry sauce. The sweet bell peppers offset the richness and heat, while the golden curry is best accompanied by unlimited amounts of aromatic long grain Thai rice.
Veal & Foie Gras Burger

Cardamom Mustard, Naan Bread
BY ordered the day’s soup – tomato asparagus – to accompany this burger selection. Feeling full(!), she gave half her burger to me!
Honestly, the "burger" tasted a little bland. The veal-foie patty was very moist, but lacked the texture found in rough ground/chopped burgers or the meaty char/sear. It was almost like a very moist creamy meatball topped with a mix of roasted peppers and spongy soft naan (I like mine drier, crisper, and more charred – notice my preference for carcinogens when it comes to the topic of meat pucks?). For me, this was the meal’s weakest dish.

Lobster bisque

This was the best item out of the Seafood Antipasto trio. Topped with two sprigs of chives, this viscous golden soup was bright in its rich shellfish base. I happily dipped ripped chuncks from the slightly toasted bread basket into this soup, coating each jagged crumb in a thick blanket of lobster essence. I was tempted to scrape at the bottom of this cup and secretly wished for more, only to realize that a small tasting would be more than satisfactory… and more and the palate would be overwhelmed as it was fairly rich.

The last Mieng Kum

Summer is a great time for festivals in Toronto, and one of the most popular is the Taste of the Danforth. It is held every year in early August and I visited on August 9, 2009 to check out the action. The festival was started in 1994 and today draws more than one million people. Danforth Avenue, one of Torontos major east-west thoroughfares, is blocked for traffic all the way from Broadview Avenue to Jones Avenue and several kilometers of road become a pedestrian zone. The Danforth area is traditionally known as Torontos Greektown and is one of the citys main entertainment and shopping areas. Dozens of restaurants, many of them Greek and equipped with patios, provide food and entertainment until late at night in an atmosphere that is indeed reminiscent of the Mediterranean. This area boasts one of the largest restaurant concentrations in the world. During the festival the street is full of booths owned by local restaurants who sell delicious foods including traditional Greek dishes such as souvlaki, gyros and baklava. Other cuisines such as Thai and Chinese are represented as well including roasted corn and delicious sweet crepes, one of my personal favourites. The 2009 Taste of the Danforth featured the Wine Garden, a temporary restaurant located in the middle of the street, and several beer gardens. Three stages showcased music of all different kinds including Greek music. The Sports Zone provided challenges and games that have been created by Torontos professional …

Amuse Bouche

and probably the best bite of the evening. Salmon rillettes, topped with dried fruit chip and paired with a pepper and honey chutney (if I recall correctly).
While the rillettes was full bodied, creamy and delightful, the fruit chip, a nice addition, was rather soggy from its contact with the moist protein. This wasn’t an issue of the chip getting soggy because I spent a couple extra moments taking the dish’s picture before consumption as CL also commented the dame about the lack of texture of the wafer thin fruit.

Didier’s oeufs en cocotte Diane

Named after Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, Chef Didier Leroy nestles an Ontario egg between gossamer layers of sauce poivrade and lightly seared cubes of Quebec venison. Expert execution in timing and skill ensure that the golden yolk from the soft baked eggs remain oozy, able to mingle with the tender meat and pepper-infused venison bone reduction. The luxurious course is topped with a slice of black truffle and pairs well with a glass from the Côtes du Rhône.
Served as a pair; single ramekin pictured. A first course option on the restaurant’s 3-course event menu, -75.
