The Basement Restaurant – 1 Spencer Street, Leamington Spa

This is The Basement Restaurant at 1 Spencer Street. On the left is Headstart Day Nursery.

1 and 3, Royal Leamington Spa – British Listed Buildings

Pair of semi-detached villas, now house, restaurant and
nursery. Dated 1842 on rainwater head, with later additions
and alterations. Pinkish-brown brick, whitewashed to front and
side facades, with Welsh slate, fish-scale roof. Neo-Tudor
style.
PLAN: central hallway.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement, 5 first-floor windows of
which the 2nd and 4th are in projecting, gabled bays, with
further range to rear left of 2 storeys, 1 first-floor window.
Main range has double-chamfered plinth.
First floor: moulded band to centre, above which first floor
projects slightly. 3 small canted oriel windows, that to
centre with traceried lights, with 2-light ‘mullion and
transom’ casements between with chamfered surrounds and sills
and beneath hollow-moulded hoods.
Ground floor: left and central entrances, steps to part-glazed
doors, the upper panels arched, in 4-centre-arched surround
with hoodmould.
2 canted bay windows with ‘mullion and transom’ casement
windows, to right a 3-light ‘mullion and transom’ casement
with chamfered surround and sill, hoodmould and blind box.
Basement has casement windows. Quatrefoil decoration to gable,
that to left with hoodmould. Decorative bargeboards. Range to
left, first floor has casement window with cambered arch and
chamfered surround and sill. Ground floor: board door with
unglazed fanlight with ornate ironwork, beneath cogged arch in
chamfered surround. Also inscribed to rainwater head: ‘JG’.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: c1872, No.3 was the home of Dr Frederick F
Haynes, one of the first players of lawn tennis, a game
developed in Royal Leamington Spa. Spencer Street was laid out
1832-1850.

Schramm, President and CEO, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation November 9, 2011 (Applause) CARL SCHRAMM: Thank you Bob, and it is certainly a pleasure to be back here in Washington, particularly since I got here from Korea, and it’s nice to have a Federal Reserve lunch, something without rice. Um, anyway. Well, already you can see I’m sort of smiling, happy to talk, and I have to remind myself I’m in Washington. This is not a city of humor. This is actually America’s least fun city. Look at the buildings. I was just looking out the window here. There’s the State Department, looks as if it was designed by Mussolini, and in fact, even the Federal Reserve Board itself across the street looks like a very somber palace. My very first encounter in Washington was next door at the National Academy of Sciences where I had once upon a time as a young professor bamboozled a competition committee and became a post-doctoral fellow at the National Academy, and it was there I heard my first of three Washington jokes I’d ever heard in my entire life in this city, and I thought I’d tell them to lighten up the crowd here. So, it turns out the customs inspector of the Port of New York had died and he had an urgent request for the President, President Roosevelt, er President Wilson. Fish on the Hook with Prowling Lizards

The fish on the hook seems to swim up while the lizards prowl below in the yellow/orange light. All this is celebrated by the wrapped US flags and yellow spot lights. Blue Bird Cafe / Butler’s Fish & Chips

The Blue Bird Cafe has had a loyal flock since it first opened in 1928. Owned almost continuously by the Butler family, it’s been a favourite of Regina Beach residents and visitors for several generations. The cafe wasn’t open yet when we went – it opens on the Victoria Day long weekend. However, the take-out window was open and there were plenty of customers.

Fish, seafood – the freshest kind – is on the menu at the chic and funky Blue Door fish, where new Executive Chef Sean Bernal whips ups delicious dishes

After two days here, we have decided it’s the New York of the West Coast (but you wouldn’t want to say that to a Friscan or New Yorker!) We spent two busy days and three nights here and loved it. Having managed to find a central motel with free parking (a rarity for a city where apparently a parking space is as hard to find as true love), we spent our first evening exploring Nob Hill’s (tee hee!) bars and restaurants. The next day was action-packed. We took a cable car (like a tram but is pulled by underground cables) down some incredibly steep roads into Union Square and began with the Lonely Planet’s self-guided walking tour (we love these!). This took us around Union Square (including another Levi’s shop and views from Macys) and then to the gate of Chinatown. Here the Chinese New Year celebrations were still in evidence with a group of Chinese Dragons accompanied by copious firecracker-throwing and drum-playing locals visiting all the local businesses to bring them luck. We had a peek in a few of the Chinese trinket shops and food markets before heading down Jack Kerouac alley.
