I left Melaka early in the morning and didn’t arrive in Tanah Rata (The Cameron Highlands) until 6pm. I’m getting almost as good at sleeping on buses as I am on planes, though, so I don’t mind the long hauls. I checked into the Cameronian Inn, which is a low-key and lovely place on the edge of town, and had another fantastic and cheap Indian dinner around the corner. Friday morning I set out to do some jungle trekking, so I walked through Tanah Rata first to pick up some snacks. I instantly liked the Cameron Highlands; the air was actually cool, and that combined with the gorgeous mountain scenery and the clear streams made me feel like I was somewhere in the Appalachians or back in New Zealand. There are about a dozen trails of varying difficulties scattered around the area; I chose #9A because it was close to my hotel, well-marked, and it ran by a waterfall. Ten minutes into the walk I found my fourth wild snake of the trip so far, but it bolted across the path quickly and I have yet to find a field guide to identify it. Looked like a small water snake of some kind. It only took 2 hours to walk down and back up 9A, so I started track 8 afterwards, but gave up and came back after 45 minutes …

Диксиленд классический, самый молодой и бойкий – ударник глубоко за 40, солист и гитарист помнит первое выступление Утёсова… Но лабают – неожиданно – мило… Обстановка – красные гобеленовые диваны, кресла, скатерти; цветомузыка; отсутствие в наличии половины блюд из меню и пр. – всколыхнуло в душе всё самое доброе, заставила искать глазами фарцовщиков и путан. Если бы не свадьба в соседнем банкетном зальчике, мы бы свалили быстро. Fantastic bite sized fried dough that’s dusted in sparkly granulated sugar and filled with a small stream of goat milk caramel. In retrospect I’m not sure where the berries were and whether the blueberry coulis was necessary (pretty plate, but superfluous. It added an extra, and unnecessary, saccharine layer to the already well balanced dessert) but in retrospect, brought it to a higher level. This was no road side snack in appearance or execution. Very good.

The owner from the homestay we had coffee last night comes by with his wife from their morning walk. He stops and says he has the feeling that he knows me – this deja-vu feeling is also on my side, perhaps not as strong. When he asks where I would be working I tell him and he knows. He has been a supplier of printing material to this company for 5 years when the company had still been at its old location. He leaves and comes back after 10 minutes with two Tombretta coffees – very nice of him and for us a “real” wake up elexir in the early morning hours.
