Entry from: Mae Salong, Thailand Entry Title: “A visit to the Golden Triangle” Entry: “Chiang Kong/Chiang Rai/Mae Salong/Mae Sai/ Chiang Saen I did mention that I had to use the bus since the boat from LP was canceled, did I? We left LP at 5.30pm and after stopping every 15 min or so I got the bad feeling that this bus ride is going to be longer than 12 hours. We had plenty of pit stops to relieve ourselves which was always easier for the guys as the women had to walk away to find a spot or had to have long sarongs. The bus ride was rather uneventful until the moment our tire popped. By that time it was about 7 in the morning and we were about two hours from the border. The guys had the tire fixed faster than I could say ‘well, we will be here for a bit’. We got to Huay Xia bus station around 9am, got on a pick-up that dropped us off at the border, got through immigration, paid 10.000 kip for the boat over to Thailand and that was that. Good morning Thailand! I think I am really getting a kick out of land/river border crossings; so much more interesting and eventful than just flying into a country. Chiang Kong looked like a sleepy little Mekong town and I could have probably chilled out for a day there but I wasn’t really up for it. It was hot and I wanted to get to the mountains hoping for some cooler …

Entry from: Fussen, Germany Entry Title: “Lederhosen and Schneeballen” Entry: “Waking after a terrific nights sleep in a comfy quiet room, we were served breakfast of meat, cheese and eggs. This was a little foreign to our stomachs but we ate a little just to be polite. We headed directly north from Landeck across the Fernpass towards Fussen. At the top we once again stopped and enjoyed coffee and apple crumble for morning tea. The Austrian Alps are very different from the Swiss Alps and I never get bored riding through them, as they are just as spectacular, with fabulous views around every corner. The roads are well maintained and the traffic is very light and very well behaved. Every day we pass hundreds and hundreds of motorcycles, all of them waving or nodding in acknowledgment (respect?). This is not a common practice in Australia and by the end of the day I begin to feel like the nodding dog on the back shelf of a car. We arrived in Fussen before lunch and checked in to LA House Hostel. Lahdo greeted us warmly and when he discovered that I was a web designer he excitedly started offering me hundreds of euros if I would make him a website. Much as I would love to help him out, I do not need the money nor the hassle nor time taken away from my travels. We will probably stay in Fussen for a few …

Entry from: Luxor, Egypt Entry Title: “King Tut and amazing street food” Entry: “After waking up with the sun on the felucca we headed out to Kom Ombo and Edfu temples [15 Pounds and 25 Pounds respectively, some with discount]. Our first stop was at Kom Ombo temple, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek. While the complex was not as large as what we were about to see in Luxor, some of the remaining hieroglyphs and colored paintings were quite astounding. With Edfu, dedicated to Horus, these two temples were the next on my list to see, which I was originally upset that I would potentially be missing. For the fact that it was only about US for entry into both, plus about more for transit, I was really pleased. Edfu temple has a similar layout, with some pretty interesting hieroglyphics and color remaining. For those going on this trip, try and see if your guide will bend and take you to these two temples. While not the biggest or the best, they are worth a look. From Edfu we drove an hour and a half to Luxor and stopped at our hotel, the Susanna, located across from Luxor, to clean up before heading out for the day. Our room had a balcony overlooking the entire temple which made me quite happy. Some of us ordered silver cartouches for friends back home, and I picked up mine for my girlfriend …

Mango and Pistachio Kulfi

Refreshing, icy solid and very nice.
Even though many of our dishes weren’t filled with the usual heavy spicing I’m accustomed to when ordering Indian cuisine, I was quite pleased that they were so friendly to the palate and mellow (in a very good way). What was even better was the each ingredient was still fresh and distinct (i.e. not a boiled down mess) which is rare for most of the Indian fare I’ve had in the city. This is a very good thing, but the fact that the naan is excellent, and the restaurant’s location is along the subway line (*if* one had to take the subway), making it ease of going to Cuisine of India a very good thing.
