Constitution Dock [Hobart]

Constitution Dock is the harbour-side dock area of Hobart, the capital city of the Australian state of Tasmania, on the Derwent River. The dock is adjacent to other Hobart landmark areas, Victoria Dock, Salamanca Place and Battery Point, and forms part of the foreshore of Sullivans Cove. The dock consists of a rock-walled marina with an opening for boats. The bridge is normally closed, allowing pedestrian access around the dock. The dock is normally used by motor pleasure boats, yachts, and fishing boats serving the city’s fish market and restaurants, several of which are at the northern end of the dock. Constitution Dock is famous for being the rallying point and party venue for the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, held from Boxing Day (the day after Christmas Day) until yachts complete their 630 nautical mile journey from Sydney. Hoi An Fish Market (Hoi An, Vietnam)

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Hoi An was once the major Vietnamese trading centre for silk, porcelain, pepper, cinnamon and medicinal plants. When the river eventually filled with silt the trading moved further north to Danang.
The town’s distinctive architecture remains intact despite the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is one of Vietnam’s most picturesque towns. Some of the streets of Hoi An are like time capsules from centuries past. As a busy trading centre in the 16th and 17th centuries it was a hub for seafarers from China, Japan, Portugal and Holland. Wandering through the streets it is easy to spot features reflecting this multinational past.
While the whole town sleeps, the fishermen are hard at work, catching delicious seafood that will be served freshly at the city’s restaurants and markets. It is a unique experience to visit the Hoi An fish market when the fishermen are bringing their night’s catch to shore. From daybreak, the fishing boats pull up to the dock unloading the fish they’ve caught the previous night. Conical hats are everywhere. For the next few hours the dock takes on a frenzied atmosphere as locals descend on the market, after the freshest fish and the best price.

Summer is a great time for festivals in Toronto, and one of the most popular is the Taste of the Danforth. It is held every year in early August and I visited on August 9, 2009 to check out the action. The festival was started in 1994 and today draws more than one million people. Danforth Avenue, one of Torontos major east-west thoroughfares, is blocked for traffic all the way from Broadview Avenue to Jones Avenue and several kilometers of road become a pedestrian zone. The Danforth area is traditionally known as Torontos Greektown and is one of the citys main entertainment and shopping areas. Dozens of restaurants, many of them Greek and equipped with patios, provide food and entertainment until late at night in an atmosphere that is indeed reminiscent of the Mediterranean. This area boasts one of the largest restaurant concentrations in the world. During the festival the street is full of booths owned by local restaurants who sell delicious foods including traditional Greek dishes such as souvlaki, gyros and baklava. Other cuisines such as Thai and Chinese are represented as well including roasted corn and delicious sweet crepes, one of my personal favourites. The 2009 Taste of the Danforth featured the Wine Garden, a temporary restaurant located in the middle of the street, and several beer gardens. Three stages showcased music of all different kinds including Greek music. The Sports Zone provided challenges and games that have been created by Torontos professional …
